NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY

The evidence is clear.  Well-being supports productivity at every level. Let's take a look around the world at effective national practices that connect the dots between productivity, performance, happiness

NORWAY

Norway stands out as Scandinavia’s productivity leader. Despite an average workweek of about 27 hours, employees produce nearly twice as much as their counterparts in the UK or Israel. The country also ranks among the happiest in the world, according to the World Happiness Report.

FRANCE

France is often ranked among the world’s top health care systems. In 2017, it introduced a legal “right to disconnect,” protecting employees from after-hours work communications. Workers typically receive about 30 days of paid leave each year, and a 2000 reform reduced the standard workweek from 39 to 35 hours.

SWITZERLAND

Ranked among the world’s most productive nations, employees work just over 30 hours per week on average. The country also ranks among the fittest globally and consistently scores near the top of the World Happiness Report.

LUXEMBOURG

Luxembourg ranks as the most productive country in the world. Employees work an average of just 29 hours per week, receive five weeks of paid leave annually, and the country has championed workplace health promotion through a formal declaration within the European Union.

AUSTRALIA

With one of the highest GDPs per capita globally, Australians work an average of about 35 hours per week and often prioritize flexibility over higher pay. The country has also seen political advocacy focused specifically on national health and well-being.

CANADA

Canada’s health care system ranks 30th globally, placing it near the bottom among developed nations. National productivity sits at 13th, and Canadians work an average of 37.7 hours per week across full- and part-time roles. We rank 9th in the World Happiness Report. The 2016 Index of Canadian Wellbeing from the University of Waterloo highlights our overall state and offers key recommendations for improvement.
